FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 27, 2006 - Ann Arbor, Michigan - Arotech Corporation (NasdaqNM: ARTX) announced today that its Simulation and Security Division, through its FAAC subsidiary, has begun offering an enhanced version of its Fire and EMS Driver Training Simulator designed to reduce the number of accidents involving fire tenders, which are fire trucks that can carry 3,000 or more gallons of water.
According to the United States Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association, about 25 percent of all firefighter fatalities occur during traffic crashes. Of these, tenders are involved in more accidents than any other type of fire truck. This is particularly important in rural areas. In urban areas, firefighters rely on piping systems with hydrants to bring water to the fire. In rural areas, where there is no piped water distribution system, firefighters rely on tenders to bring water to the fire. The new version of the Fire and EMS Driver Training Simulator has been well received by fire departments and training academies that serve rural areas.
"We've been listening to firefighters," said Kurt Flosky, FAAC's Executive Vice President. "They tell us that tenders are the most dangerous vehicles in their fleet, particularly for volunteer fire departments where firefighters do not drive fire trucks as often. With their high centers of gravity and their shifting loads, tenders can be very hard to control unless you are properly trained and periodically re-trained. We are thrilled to offer this new simulator capability which we believe will have a significant impact on firefighter and public safety."
The Fire and EMS Driver Training Simulators include a visual rendering of a tender and simulate what it is like to drive a tender when it is full, empty, or even partly full, in a variety of settings, under varying conditions. These simulators also have the ability to simulate most other types of emergency response vehicles including tillers (long fire trucks that need a second driver in the rear to steer in tight places), pumpers, ladder trucks and ambulances. The Fire and EMS Driver Training Simulators are a part of the FAAC Public Safety Suite, which provides simulation-based training tools for first responders including fire, EMS and law enforcement.
