In response to our clients in the transit industry, FAAC has developed a simulator-based training curriculum for transit instructors to train new students and seasoned operators.

The training curriculum was designed to follow how transit instructors teach - from simple, basic techniques to practical application to complex multi-tasking while in the driver seat.

The curriculum package contains a technique manual, a script library, and an instructor guide.

Technique Manual

Content for the Technique Manual was collected from our simulator users. While not endorsed as a FAAC method for training, they are taught by some of the leading transit agencies in the country and their techniques have been proven on the street. Some of the training elements contained in the manual include:

  • Turns
  • Mirrors (using real mirrors)
  • Bus stop procedures
  • Intersection awareness
  • Braking
  • Following distance
  • Defensive driving
Script Library

The Script Library is a collection of training scripts developed by FAAC's curriculum developers using the Scenario Toolbox. They can be used either as standalone training lessons or in conjunction with the Technique Manual training content.

Scripts were designed to follow a path from basic (100 level) to complex (200 level) instruction. Instructors can use the script path to reinforce a single concept, such as turns. Then, when the student is confident in the basic turn technique, an instructor can use an accompanying script that includes turn obstacles, hazards, and distractions.

A typical lesson path looks like this:

  Pivot points (100 level)
-->Turn hazards (100 level)
-->Right hand turns (100 level)
-->Left hand turns (100 level)
-->Turns with obstacles (200 level)
-->Practice scripts (200 level)

Instructor Guide

The Instructor Guide is used to blend an agency’s existing curriculum with the bus or paratransit simulator.

The Guide contains chapters on using shortcuts at the simulator to increase instructor efficiency, creating and using training scripts that reinforce training elements in the virtual world, assimilating students properly to the virtual environment, and student record creation and management.

The Guide also contains a series of practice exercises at the end of each chapter for instructors to develop a mastery over each topic.
