Simulation-based Training to Facilitate a Controlled and Coordinated Response

An active shooter is defined by the United States Department of Homeland Security as  “an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area.” Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly; in most instances, active shooters use firearms and choose soft target locations, and there is little to no pattern or method in the selection of victims. Every active shooter situation is unique and yet requires a controlled response by law enforcement and security teams as quickly as possible. Active shooter response is complex, dynamic, and high-risk; preparing for an effective active shooter response demands complex and dynamic training.

Responding to an Active Shooter

Every MILO simulation solution ships with scenarios that focus on active shooter response in soft target locations. Scenarios have a range of settings (schools, houses of worship, retail locations, outdoor events, etc.), and diverse actors (a variety of ages, cultural backgrounds, and so on), and each unique immersive scenario has branching decision trees. This allows your trainees to iteratively train in high-intensity active threat situations requiring precision responses and real-time decision-making.

With simulation-based training, you can prepare for the complexity of large events with many potential victims while avoiding the logistical challenges of live training in a school, church, or shopping center. In addition, your officers will have the opportunity to practice in high-pressure, high-population, and high-danger situations in simulation and become adept at maintaining situational awareness and applying appropriate interventions as early as possible in order to contain the situation and control the chaos quickly. MILO Virtual simulators allow first responders to safely participate in iterative and localized training to hone their instincts and skills to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Simulator Tools to Support your Policies, Values, and Officers

In addition to existing scenarios, Optional MILO Course Designer software empowers instructors to create new, fully interactive video scenarios allowing them to apply their policies and procedures in recognizable local scenarios. They can then involve community leaders and coordinate potential responses together.

MILO Range simulators can also be paired with the gunSHOT Box, an electric gunfire simulation system that is remotely controlled to reproduce the sounds of gunshots on-demand. Trainees can experience the intensity of shots fired with safe sound levels without needing cartridges, expendables, or speakers.
