Driving Simulators that Capture Real Human Experiences

Human factors touch every aspect of roadway safety and automotive design. Civil engineering, traffic management, and automotive innovation all increasingly demand a more detailed and nuanced understanding of the human experience behind the wheel. That’s why Realtime Technologies (RTI) creates simulation solutions that focus on supporting human factors research.

  • No “Black Box”: With RTI’s hardware/software simulation platform, researchers and engineers have unlimited access to all data generated during a simulation. Our software is highly extensible, allowing for easy integration with third-party software and hardware, including biometrics tracking, A/V capture, traffic simulators, data analysis, and more.
  • Unmatched Hardware Customization: RTI can turn any vehicle into a high-fidelity custom simulator. As a Southeast Michigan-based company, we benefit from more than a century of local automotive expertise, offering a level of hardware customization and finish quality that our competitors cannot match. We collaborate directly with OEMs, automotive engineers, designers, and researchers to fabricate custom simulators with exceptional fit and finish.
  • Human Factors First: From the start, RTI has been dedicated to capturing the human experience behind the wheel. We draw on decades of in-house expertise in simulation hardware, multibody vehicle dynamics, and graphical human factors simulation and modeling across many fields: military simulation, first responder training, vehicle operator training, and more.

Our simulators don’t just accurately reproduce vehicle dynamics and interfaces: they place people in the most realistic possible version of the world drivers experience, and capture every interaction between driver, vehicle, and the simulated world.

Simplify and Accelerate Your Human Factors Research

That starts with a suite of tools that support intuitive and efficient “drag-and-drop” driving scenario development for research experiments. That simulation software seamlessly integrates with our full range of networkable hardware research simulators, as well as your third-party hardware and software tools (including those that require bidirectional data transfer). In a single flexible and scalable simulator solution, you can factor in a wide number of variables, creating a true-to-life vehicle operation experience—including road conditions, hazards, potential distractions, new vehicle features, system faults, equipment failures, automated driving, and more. This combination of open software and custom hardware creates a comprehensive, multi-sensory user experience for the driver. Throughout that experience, your RTI solution can capture high-quality, actionable information on driver and vehicle behaviors, including data from many third-party tools, ready to load to your preferred data analytics and visualization tools.

Every RTI research simulation solution arrives with comprehensive libraries of baseline maneuvers, vehicle dynamics models, scenes, driving environments, and hundreds of vehicles, animals, pedestrians, buildings, and other static objects. These serve as convenient building blocks, without limiting your options. Users can always create, import, edit, compile, and run their own custom assets to accurately capture the world they want to create. These might include audio and visual objects, vehicle models and proprietary vehicle dynamics, unique vehicle behaviors, custom maps from RoadRunner, traffic simulation, and more. A new modularized architecture allows users to customize their software installation and ensure seamless updates and support throughout the product lifecycle, while still maintaining data privacy and compartmentalizing proprietary data.

Researchers are already using RTI simulation solutions to design better roundabouts and intersections, improve traffic management and safety in work zones, understand psychological and neurological factors that influence driver behavior, and protect vulnerable road users by exploring how pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and delivery vehicles share the road.

Advanced Simulation for Automotive Research and Vehicle Development

Your RTI simulator is controlled through SimCreator, our real-time vehicle driving simulation and modeling system. Using its graphical interface, you can configure and coordinate vehicles, driving scenarios, dynamics, environments, monitoring, and driver feedback.

This system can model a wide range of vehicle types (four-, six-, or eight-wheeled, tracked, etc.) with varying load types and sizes. The pre-loaded driving environment includes every sort of roadway, route, or set of driving and weather conditions. The simulator can be further augmented with custom road networks and driving environments created in RoadRunner, allowing researchers to fully replicate any road system, traffic pattern, or set of operating conditions. Multiple simulators can be networked to create a rich, naturalistic environment in which many human drivers simultaneously interact with the same scenario. Optional automated driving modules allow for virtual testing of driver assistance systems, enabling safe research on distracted driving, self-driving car technology, ADAS, and more.

Whether you are researching road safety or developing and testing a new vehicle design, SimCreator gives you the platform you need for insightful analysis of the human experience of real-world conditions.

SimADAS and SimDriver: Modules for the Cutting Edge of Human Factors Research

With RTI’s Autonomy Package, you can safely and fully evaluate how people will respond to and interact with autonomous vehicles under widely varying operating conditions and in a wide range of driving environments. RTI’s optional SimADAS and SimDriver modules complement each other to cover the entire spectrum of assistive driving technologies:

SimADAS models advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) features that are already available in vehicles on the road today. With SimADAS, you can explore how drivers will adapt to SAE levels 1 and 2 autonomous features.

SimDriver simulates the experience of using SAE Level 3 and Level 4 systems. SimDriver is especially valuable for exploring driver distraction and vigilance while using autonomous driving features, and is considerably safer and more cost-effective than creating and operating prototype vehicles.

Both SimADAS and SimDriver seamlessly interoperate with all elements of SimCreator, including any third-party components or applications you’ve integrated via the SDK.
