Bus Driver Training Simulators

Bus Driving Simulators

What makes our municipal bus simulator different from any other is that it was designed by transit agency experts to meet their unique training needs. Things like a true 315º field of vision, driver cab replication, and motion seats allow students to feel when they hit a curb, turn too fast or brake too hard. They learn which knobs to turn and toggles to press, and know it will be the same in the real bus.

Bus Simulators & Simulation Training Solutions

Operating a bus poses a unique set of challenges. Some of these are strictly physical–the chronic muscle and skeletal strains that come with an 8 to 12 hour shift, where even slightly ergonomically unwise decisions can multiply into lasting injuries. But the more substantial strains are psychological: The operating environment for a city transit driver is as complex as that faced by an airline pilot–with the added challenges that come with simultaneously monitoring and managing traffic conditions, unpredictable pedestrians, and dozens of passengers.

We’ve teamed up with transit agency experts in order to assure that every aspect of FAAC bus simulators is as true-to-life as possible. This starts with the hardware. We craft partial and complete cabs, precisely matching your fleets’ controls, indicators, instrument clusters, and switches, with force-feedback steering, motion seats, and wraparound screens. And it carries through to the software and simulation scenarios, which can be built to mirror specific geographical elements matching your area and the actual routes through communities you serve.

Has a specific incident caused concerns in your community? We can build custom scenarios around that incident, so your operators are prepared to meet that challenge. This real-life approach to bus simulator development results in an effective and efficient training process with a host of benefits to both the trainer and trainee. Training programs using FAAC’s bus simulators have been shown to increase fuel economy and the overall efficiency of transit operations while decreasing accidents by nearly 70 percent, and reducing new-hire washout rates by 35 percent. Most importantly, with a FAAC bus driving simulator you can reap all of these benefits with absolutely no risk to equipment, workers, or the community.

Custom Bus Driving Simulation Solutions

Our flagship bus simulators are the MB-2000 and MB-1000. The MB-2000 bus driver training system has a fully modeled cab with authentic controls (either generic, or customized to match your fleet). The multi-screen high-definition display system provides a geometrically correct 330º field-of-view. Real physical mirrors give operators authentic practice with one of the most challenging aspects of piloting a large vehicle. The MB-1000 offers many of the same advantages and capabilities on a more economical hardware platform.

Either can be customized to match your fleet and train the operators of almost any transit vehicle. Every simulator comes with all of the tools you need to create your own custom training scenarios, as well as a full library of pre-programmed lessons. These lessons emphasize correct mirror usage, proper handling of temporary visual obstructions, managing pivot points, and other critical transit operator training objectives.

FAAC’s programmable simulation software supports a completely customizable mix of traffic densities and behaviors, weather conditions (with extremely fine control of severity and mix), lighting conditions (day, night, dusk, dawn, glaringly bright to overcast), equipment failures, pedestrian behaviors, and more. All of these can be included in pre-programmed training scenarios, or adjusted by the instructor in real-time.

Bus Training Simulator Customer-for-Life

Every FAAC solution goes beyond drilling skills. These are tools for honing good judgment in the heat of the moment, even as a variety of factors and pressures compete for your attention. We don’t sell equipment; we partner with transit agencies and their instructors to develop and create your ideal custom training solution. You will be treated as a “Customer for Life” from day one: We invest the time up front to understand your needs, then develop and deliver the appropriate turn-key solution. We’ll help you find the best way to integrate this custom solution into your training processes, and support you in maintaining and evolving this solution as your needs change over time.
