VR Simulation Training vs. “Full-Panel” Firefighter Pump Operations Training

Pump operations training is a good example of one place where VR training is bridging this gap. Pump operators need to be able to respond quickly to their entire environment—not just what they expect to see on the panel. They need an immersive learning environment in which they can train for any contingency—staying situationally aware in a rapidly evolving large-scale disaster, flowing water in the bitter cold, diagnosing and responding to a sudden pressure loss—without risk to personal safety or equipment.

Until now, FAAC’s original full-panel Pump Ops Simulator (patented) was the only fire-fighting simulation system available that realistically emulated pump operations and internal dynamics for both water and foam-based fire suppression. With Full-Panel Pump Ops, trainees work at a full-sized pump panel constructed from genuine OEM dials, switches, and levers. Tactile, visual, and aural feedback systems integrated into the panel unit itself give operators a complete training experience, familiarizing them with all the elements of “normal pump operations” (including a full range of low-frequency/high-risk events) and every fault, error, or complication imaginable—safely, conveniently, and without taking vital apparatus out of service.

Full-Panel Pump Ops

Full-Panel Pump Ops allows reinforcement of hands-on pump operation training for new and existing pump operators
in a disciplined, cost-efficient, and safe environment, preventing injuries to the trainees and damage to the equipment. Reduce your environmental impact by not using gallons of water or harmful foam. With Pump Ops, you can train in any weather and keep units in service, and reduce support personnel.

  • Fully Immersive, Self-Led Scenario-Based Training – On-Scene Procedures Courseware
  • Complete Incident Simulation – Train the full incident
  • Safe, Low-Risk Environment – Practice complex scenarios without exposure
  • Cost-Effective Deployment – Reduces consumables and apparatus downtime
  • Repeatable & Standardized – Consistent, measurable training outcomes
  • Compact & Portable – Deployable anywhere without dedicated facilities

On-Scene Immersion

Pump Ops On-Scene is a lightweight, low-overhead, cost-effective, portable alternative to full-panel simulators like Pump Ops. It offers a similar low-risk, high-reward pump operator training experience. But instead of being hands-on at the panel, it puts firefighters on the scene with a completely immersive VR experience. Pump Ops On-Scene uses commercial-grade Valve Index virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display and controllers, and runs scenarios on the same XVR Simulation Platform used in FAAC’s immersive fire service driving and incident command simulators.

  • Complete Incident Simulation – Train the full incident
  • Safe, Low-Risk Environment – Practice complex scenarios without exposure

Digital Touch

Pump Ops Digital Touch provides an introduction to pump operations in this digital age. PO-DT exhibits all the functionality to allow learning of the basic functionality of pump operations and an understanding of digital components that add ever increasing complexity for tomorrow’s pump operator.

Built using commercial off-the-shelf displays and components, PO-DT features a modular, scalable design that can be configured to match specific fleet types and departmental training objectives. It provides realistic panel interaction and adds an immersive touch to initial learning.

• Cost-Effective – Make mistakes with no cost repercussions
• Standardized, Repeatable Training – Immersive Learning increases knowledge retention
• Large-Format Multi-Touch Panel – Realistic pump panel interaction in smaller profile
• Configurable Panel Layouts – Replicate specific configurations readily
• Software-Driven Hydrodynamics – No water, fuel, or consumables required
• Modular & Scalable Design – Expand functionality as training needs evolve

The Immersive Firefighting Continuum of Training

In order to meet the real-world necessity for comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, multiple-user emergency response training, FAAC has created the “Continuum of Training.” This solution networks multiple FAAC fire simulators, allowing for incremental “simple-to-complex” content-focused student learning.

Together, they form a complete “Continuum” of fire training simulation solutions, where the virtual environment trains firefighters in all aspects of scene management skills.

All of FAAC’s “full-range” simulators can integrate and communicate with each other through the Continuum of Training, creating consistency throughout any scenario. This integration includes Next Generation Hose Training, hose handling and fire suppression, vehicle driving of all vehicle types, interactive EMS emergency response, on-scene command and control, and Full-Panel Pump Ops. (At this time, FAAC’s VR sims, like VR Pump Ops, remain self-contained, standalone training tools. It does not integrate with the full family of FAAC fire training simulators.)

Learn more about our Fire Pump Operator Simulator

Pump Ops is a simulation training device that provides a hands-on, immersive experience in the operation of an apparatus pump. This simulator exposes the trainee to various evolving situations that they can interact with in a safe classroom environment. Pump Ops provides training that cannot be duplicated safely using real apparatus. This saves wear and possible damage to firefighting apparatus.
