Tip for Instructors: De-Escalation Is a Two-Way Street

The Two-Way Street of De-Escalation and Simulators
Simulators are excellent for refining verbal skills, practicing de-escalation tactics, and building confidence in a safe environment. When a trainee uses the CIT model, communicates with empathy, asks the right questions, and offers help, instructors may be more inclined to select the ideal outcome option for the scenario to reward these behaviors. These ideal outcomes rarely involve the use of force. We tend to forget one important factor in the real world—the subject gets a vote.

Train for the Unpredictable
De-escalation doesn’t guarantee a peaceful resolution. Even when trainees do everything right, the subject may escalate. To reflect this reality, periodically introduce unexpected threats into scenarios—even when trainees are using appropriate techniques. This helps build resilience, reinforces decision-making under stress, and prepares officers for the unpredictability of real encounters.
