Controlled Response to Complex Situations

Every officer is expected to walk into an emergency situation and make the right call. Fortunately, officers now have a wide range of tools, techniques, and strategies to draw upon. In ideal circumstances, modern law enforcement can clearly communicate with individuals on the scene and then, if necessary, smoothly move along the force continuum so that the lowest application of force brings the situation under control.

Every emergency requires split-second decision-making by responding officers, but high-stress environments impact heart rates and adrenaline, affecting emotional regulation. In order to be prepared for the real complexity of their jobs, law enforcement needs the opportunity to train in realistic, open-ended scenarios—ones that test their situational awareness and where all of their de-escalation and force options are on the table—thereby maximizing opportunities for best outcomes.

A Force Options Training Simulator That Goes Beyond Firearms

Immersive, emotionally intense MILO force options training simulation systems prepare officers to identify quickly, process, assess, and ultimately engage in complex and high-risk situations.

Instructors increasingly report that they don’t just want to prepare officers for the physical facts of using force; they need to prepare officers for the emotional realities of real-life use-of-force situations. MILO offers scenario-based police training that requires the trainee to choose the appropriate tactic—whether or not that involves using a weapon. While weapons handling, marksmanship, and hands-on skills will always be of the utmost importance, police officers’ decision-making and communication skills are often more critical in maintaining public safety and trust.

Every MILO simulator is fundamentally two simulators in one: a “skills-focused” training system (akin to a very advanced firing range) and a “human interaction simulator” (where officers directly experience and navigate immersive, interactive, real-world law enforcement scenarios). These are fully emotionally immersive role-playing simulation scenarios built around branching decision trees. Bringing together the skills-focused and interaction-focused elements gives officers a much-needed opportunity to practice balancing tactical thinking, active communication, and force training under rapidly evolving, stressful conditions.

Force Options Training System Features

All MILO Range systems support multiple trainees with multiple force options. MILO systems integrate with your specific officer training needs, providing simulations and live-fire options, utilizing a variety of firearms as well as less-than-lethal force options such as tasers and OC pepper spray. “Skill-focused” modes include both firing range and CGI live-action exercises with real-time shot feedback and analysis, static and moving targets, and a library of over 60 specific skill-based exercises. “Human interaction” scenarios offer full emotional immersion. The branching decision trees are controlled by the instructor, who can dynamically shift the trajectory of the interaction in order to help officers practice specific situational awareness, judgment, de-escalation, and communication strategies. All immersive scenarios include integrated software tools for after-action decision analysis and replay.

MILO systems can be upgraded with live-fire/laser options, shootback systems, custom scenarios, and more, including adding firearm recoil kits to new or existing weapons. Your simulation-based training solution will grow and change as the challenges your officers face—and the tools available to them—expand and transform.

In contrast to many “force options training” systems, MILO systems are not limited to simple police firearms training and less-than-lethal force options. Scenarios also provide opportunities to train on crisis intervention, situational awareness, judgment skills, active listening and communication, operational strategy, and de-escalation.

MILO also offers law enforcement training solutions like DrivingForce. This is the industry’s first fully integrated police driver training and force-options simulator solution, training officers to smoothly transition from pursuit to contact,  eliminating avoidable mental and physical mistakes.

By training across the full spectrum of real-world possibilities, law enforcement officers can be ready to have a controlled response in any situation.

Preparing Your Instructors to Train Your Policy

MILO solutions go beyond the simulation. Over and over again, trainers and instructors report that the real value in their integrated, immersive use-of-force simulator is in the opportunities it creates to pinpoint exactly where their students are succeeding and falling short and zero in on the often subtle opportunities to change the course of an interaction.

MILO offers tools to facilitate after-action debriefing, analyze trainee performance, and create custom content unique to your needs. We train your instructors to use these advanced simulation tools so that your policies can be consistently communicated as part of every exercise. Your simulation-based training solution will grow and change as the challenges your officers face—and the tools available to them—expand and transform.
