This year, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office will have a highly trained School Resource Officer in every unincorporated Brevard County public school and both Alternative Learning Centers.

District Security currently serves 104 campus locations, including 90 Brevard Public School locations and 14-Charter School campuses.

School Resource Officers are being trained on the high tech MILO Range, which is the world-leading provider of interactive simulation training products and is widely regarded as the nation’s fastest growing manufacturer of best-in-class firearms and use-of-force training systems.

Today’s use-of-force simulators are much more than shoot, don’t shoot tools. They are extremely sophisticated training tools with scenarios that can branch in dozens of different directions based on the student’s actions and the instructor’s interpretation of the student’s performance.

“The training value of these simulators has made them invaluable tools in contemporary law enforcement training,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“Our career development team wanted to get the very best training technology available because we are training our Guardians, School Resource Officers and Deputies to protect our most precious of assets – our children – and so we wanted to have the very best equipment.”

Immersive, emotionally vivid MILO simulations prepare officers to identify, process, and comprehend information about how to respond to any situation.

With the situational awareness training made possible by MILO Range simulation, officers will be able to maintain focus and stay aware of their environment. The result of the training experience is increased safety for both the officer and others on the scene.

“What you see in the MILO system is a great example of that high technology,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“The MILO system puts you in the center of whatever might be going on as you have to look at it from all angles. With our old technology, you were facing the screen and it was very antiquated.”

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office recently facilitated a Public Safety round table discussion at the request of Florida Governor Ron Desantis to discuss school safety and other innovative measures BCSO is using to make sure that Brevard public schools are safe at every level.

“The round table discussion was attended by members of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office Command Team, School Security Team, Governor DeSantis, the First Lady of Florida, Casey DeSantis and Andrew Pollack, an incredible advocate and grieving father who lost his daughter Meadow in the senseless murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School,” said Sheriff Ivey.

“The Sheriff’s Office was asked to host the round table discussion and subsequent news conference concerning the issuance of a Governor’s Executive Order because of our strong stance on making certain our schools are hard targets and because of our commitment to the Guardian Program that was included as part of the Governor’s Executive Order.”
