Chippewa County recently unveiled its new MILO training simulator, enhancing law enforcement preparedness.

CHIPPEWA FALLS — With a new simulator, officers from across Chippewa County can train on a variety of scenarios that play out on a screen in front of them. In some cases, a person is experiencing a medical crisis. In another, a person becomes combative and argumentative. In others, the on-screen individual pulls out a weapon, forcing the officer to choose how to respond.

Retired officer Bruce VanValkenburg, who is a reserve Chippewa County deputy, ran the computer and walked officers and students through the training scenarios Wednesday at the Chippewa County Courthouse. In one case, the officer convinced the hostile person to set down a gun and surrender.

“We are excited to have another tool to assist officers in making critical decisions in the field related to crisis response events,” Chippewa Falls Police Chief Ryan Douglas said in a press release. “The ability to have a portable judgment and de-escalation simulator available to all law enforcement jurisdictions will have a positive impact county-wide.”
