De-Escalation: Strategies for Best Possible Outcomes

De-escalation is a word that is frequently discussed by community members, politicians, and the media, but it is rarely defined and often misunderstood. This course empowers participants to have intelligent, evidence-informed conversations with the public and provides valuable tools for engaging with people in crisis. Not all situations can be “de-escalated,” but this course focuses on tools to help achieve the best possible outcomes. Through guided discussions, small group exercises, and practical tools, participants will:

  • Explain the truths of de-escalation to members of the public
  • Learn to self-regulate their emotions in high-stress environments
  • Explore the foundational elements of all human mental functions (thoughts, emotions, behaviors)
  • Learn effective tools for dealing with persons in crisis
  • Explore response tactics for the best possible outcomes

Dynamics of Officer/Citizen Encounters

This course provides officers with the tools to effectively engage citizens in a professional manner without compromising their own safety.
Through guided discussion, self-assessment, and video analysis, participants will:

• Understand how knowing your authority keeps contacts lawful

Decision Making: The Foundation of Reasonable Force

Decision Making: The Foundation of Reasonable Force examines the factors that affect decision-making under stress and provides practical tools to make reasonable use of force decisions while simultaneously increasing officer safety. Through guided discussions, case studies, and video analysis, participants will:

  • Examine current use of force trends and the legal foundations of reasonable force
  • Examine the science of human performance and decision-making
  • Identify tools for improving decision-making under stress

The Transformational Trainer

Regardless of subject matter expertise, the trainer’s role is to enhance their students’ performance. The Transformational Trainer is an instructor enhancement program designed to help you focus on the “how to train,” not just the “what to train.” This program challenges instructors to think differently about law enforcement training to improve the quality of learning transfer so that work performance improves. Through guided discussions, case studies, and video analysis, participants will:

  • Identify the characteristics of the Transformational Trainer
  • Explore the science of learning and how to make training “stick”
  • Explore generational differences and communication styles
  • Identify elements of great storytelling (hint: it’s NOT about war stories)
  • Identify methods of eliminating “death by PowerPoint”

Command Presence FTO Certification (C.T.E. Model)

This 40-hour Certification Course is the next evolution in Field Training. Participants will be introduced to the human-performance-based C.T.E. (Coach, Train, then Evaluate) Model© developed by Command Presence Training. This is not the San Jose or PTO model; it’s entirely new. This course emphasizes how FTOs train, not just how to evaluate. It has entirely new performance criteria based on 21st-century policing.  When applied properly, the C.T.E. model increases recruit performance, reduces washout rate, and reduces FTO burnout. It’s time to think differently about FTO training; this is your opportunity to be part of the long-overdue change. Through guided discussions, case studies, and video analysis, participants will:

  • The Science of how people learn
  • Communication strategies and generational leadership
  • Applying the C.T.E. Model© – Definitions, timelines, and best practices
  • The FTO as Coach, Leader, Tactician, and Evaluator
  • Conducting effective feedback sessions through the Socratic approach
  • Essential evaluation categories and FTO software systems
