Creative Problem Solving with MILO

How we train in advance absolutely determines how we will react in the moment. In order to ensure the best outcomes in our communities, we need our officers to hone their judgment skills in realistic, open-ended scenarios in which quick thinking and creative problem solving is paramount.

Because policing involves human beings, officers come to training with different skill-sets, different experience levels, and different training needs. Training must be adaptive from novice to mastery. Because policing involves human beings, human errors can occur. Sometimes mistakes happen along the chain of command, and it is critical that officers train in scenarios where they need to assess the situation, understand applicable case law, call dispatch for clarification, de-escalate the situation, and maintain or repair community relationships when situations go awry. Team building and team development training is critical, so that chain of command is clear, but officers also have the agency to clarify when a situation feels off.

Policing does not just involve shoot/don’t shoot situations, and police training must go far beyond marksmanship training and firing ranges, and training limited to the locations and populations in crisis. Police officers need to hone soft skills, such as communication with suspects and community members, and build a heightened awareness of surroundings, beyond assessing threat levels, so that critical decisions can be made in the moment that keep everyone safe.

Advanced Training Solutions for Skill Mastery

MILO simulated scenarios are optimized to create opportunities for officers to practice their judgment skills in real-life situations, with all the complexity, nuance, and emotional pressure these tricky situations bring. MILO systems are emotionally immersive simulators. Trainees and officers work through role-playing scenarios with branching decision trees that give them opportunities to exercise every facet of their training–from fine-tuning their presence, tone of voice, and de-escalation strategies to using force options, from less lethal solutions like Tasers or OC spray and batons, and, if necessary, sidearms.

Every HD scenario including both the standard library of more than 800 scenarios, as well as any custom-produced for your agency can be run in interactive low-light/flashlight conditions. Throughout every scenario, the instructor can make adjustments to hone and challenge every aspect of their student’s judgment, situational awareness, tactical skills, and community policing skills. Interactive feedback and debriefing occurs after every scenario, so that officers can process how situations can occur and how to best head off human error before a call escalates.
